Smokey Kelsch

SMOKEY’S BLUES HOUR

Smokey Koelsch. Smokey knows the blues; his intense love for blues has lasted throughout his lifetime. Smokey is a native of Minnesota who arrived in SLC to attend the University of Utah. He was associated with the Minneapolis blues scene and brought his knowledge and his record collection to radio for the Blues Hour.  He eventually opened Smokey’s Records which operated for many years before his retirement to rural Nevada. He also plays a fine harmonica and mandolin.

EAT YOUR HEART OUT REVIEW

RAVE ON!

Sherm “Reverend Willis” Clow. Originally from Illinois, host of Rave On! and the Eat Your Heart Out Review, the Rev is an ordained minister of the Universal Life Church, who expresses his religion – and other things – through music; music that really defined a generation, not so much the “classic” rock and soulless pop you hear these days, but music that influenced the superstars of the ’60’s and ’70’s.

GUEST HOST

Steve Bjerklie, a refugee from Marin County on his way East, who purportedly got a flat tire in SLC and decided to stay a while. He frequently guest hosted the Eat Your Heart Out Review, and the Blues Hour. His musical knowledge was a valuable contribution to both shows. A little known fact, his family lived across the street from Mike Bloomfield.

MUSIC FROM PLANET EARTH

Curt Setzer, from Sacramento. Curt is a man way way ahead of his time, who, with remarkable and uncanny ease, discovered dozens of important contemporary composers, avant-garde musicians and groups, ensembles, and musical genres decades before they were even close to being recognized by the national mainstream. He hosts Music From Planet Earth. Listening to his entire collection is equivalent to an advanced degree in musicology.

GUEST HOST

Nick Snow. Washington, D.C. Don’t let the scowl deceive you. Nick (a.k.a. “Professor Music”) was a jokester, enthusiast, story teller, life-long journalist, and tenor sax player, who had the requisite experience to provide context for the rest of us.
